Self-help housing provides home ownership opportunities for low-income Alaska residents
Wasilla, Alaska – Last year, Kolten Conan was scrolling through his Facebook page, and he happened upon photos of a house under construction. He already knew a thing or two about building homes: he’s now 21 and when he was just a little boy, he had scampered among laborers at construction sites around his hometown of Wasilla, fetching boards and helping out with seasonal work.

RCAC worked with the Spokane Indian Housing Authority (SIHA) through its Building Rural Economies (BRE) initiative. Using the BRE principles, SIHA created the Three Bands Construction Company, a full-service general contracting and construction division. Since 2016, the company has created six new full-time jobs.

Garden Valley
Garden Valley Ranchettes Homeowners, Inc. (HOA) is located in Garden Valley, an unincorporated area of Boise County, Idaho about 53 miles north/ northeast of Boise. The rural community has a population of nearly 400. The HOA owns the water system which serves 27 active water connections with two wells; however, only one is active. During January 2017, the area experienced severe and historic snow levels, which put pressure on the area’s power grid and caused the active well to fail.
